What is a Spin-off?

A spin-off is a game that has nothing to do with a certain series. Take the Pokemon series, for example. Usually, you're out to be a Pokemon Master by capturing every Pokemon that you possibly can, battling the Elite Four, and raising them all to level 100. Then they started coming out with games like Pokemon Ranger, Pokemon Puzzle Challenge, and Pokemon Snap!. As you may know, Pokemon Ranger, Pokemon Puzzle Challenge, and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon have nothing to do with capturing, battling the Elite Four, and raising them to level 100. Anymore questions? I kind of get the point... but I don't really get it, can you post more info about this? ^^;

Hm...Now let's see...Um...Pokemon Snap!. Well....All you basically do is take pictures of Pokemon and send them off to Professor Oak so they can be graded. Or say that they made a movie out of the Pokemon Snap! game. It would be about a kid that takes pictures of Pokemon and sends them off to his employer or boss. But you've seen the real Pokemon series, which has nothing at all to do with Ash going around and taking a ton of pictures of Pokemon. No, he captures them and sends them all off to battle. In Pokemon Snap!, the main character (you, the gamer) isn't capturing the Pokemon, you take their pictures without trying to disturb them or their precious habitat (which is quite ironic to me since you have both apples and some kind of a stink bomb to throw at them just so you can get a decent or rare picture of them). Or maybe if you've played any of the Final Fantasy games (which I haven't, so forgive me if I'm incorrect), you would see a bunch of main characters that would usually always be the ones in the game series. But then a game called Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles came out. Which is about you being the main character with your own choice of character, tribe, and expertise. Now, just because it has the same title doesn't mean that the same people who made the series made the spin-off. I really have no idea as to how I can break it down any further, so sorry if this doesn't help any more than last time.
